The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has pleaded with the militant group, Niger Delta Avengers which claimed responsibility for the resumed bombings of pipelines in the Niger Delta region, to have a rethink in the interest of national peace.
The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), in a press release by its National
President, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, asked militants in the region to rather probe into the real owners of oil blocs in the region instead of blowing up pipe lines, an action he said, “serves nobody’s interests”.
According to OYC, the activities of the militants are beginning to have negative impact on Nigeria’s economy, as well as exposing the region to higher risks. The release read in part: “The Ohanaeze Youth Council calls on the Niger Delta Avengers to halt the present hostilities in Niger Delta as it is affecting the economy of the country and the Niger Delta too.
“The region is under several empowerment measures by the federal government such as NDDC, Ministry of Niger Delta, Amnesty programme etc and these programmes will be under threat by these bombings. “The Avengers can ask questions on who owns the oil blocs and fields in the Niger Delta. That is what people expect them to insist on finding out and not bombing oil installations.”
On the fuel price hike, OYC called for restraint from all the parties while urging the federal government to consider the pains the masses have been subjected to. “Government should realise that Nigerians are passing through a very difficult period”, OYC said, adding that “this is not the time for more hardships while the looters of our commonwealth are enjoying it with reckless abandon”, it said.
He noted that those who have been enjoying oil subsidy payments in the past “should be made to bear the brunt and not suffering Nigerians. Nigerians are not supposed to pay through the nose to enjoy what God naturally endowed them with”. OYC also said its score card of the performances of all governors and political leaders of all Igbo- speaking states would be released on the eve of the May 29 democracy day.
The assessment, according to the release, “will cover their performances in the areas of health , education, youth empowernment and rural development as well as infrastructural develop ment”.
